Question by -ish: is this a good ‘dear host family’ letter?
i Xed out all the ‘personal’ things because this is the internet. enough said.
here it is:
Dear host family,
I am looking forward to staying with you and I wanted to tell you a bit about myself before we meet. First off, my name is XXXXX XXXX and I live in the state of XXXX in the United States of America. XXXX is a XXXX type state; we are very famous for our XXXXXXXX! There are a lot of mountains here and it’s actually a sort of desert. I’ve lived in XXXXX for pretty much my entire life, though I was born in XXXXX.
I technically have six siblings though I only really live with one of them! XXXXX is the oldest at 27. She lives about twenty minutes away from me with her husband and my baby nephew, XXXX. XXXXXX is 25. She got married last year and lives in XXXXXX now. My brother, XXXX, is 20 and a junior at XXXXXXX in CITY, STATE. Then there is my little sister, XXXXX. She is 13 and she lives with me in XXXXX. XXXX, 10, and XXXXX, 8, live in XXXXX with my biological father. I visit them for about a month of more every summer! Though I don’t see most of my siblings as often as I would like to, I am pretty close to most of them and I look forward to seeing them whenever I have the chance! My father is a Golf Pro at a golf course about half a mile from out house where I am going to work in January as a janitor. My mother is a dispatcher in a nearby town.
Typically, I clean the kitchen every day after school. I also do my own laundry. I am actually a very clean, organized person and my bedroom reflects that. We have seven cats, so I’m very used to animals in the house!
In school, I usually get As and Bs. My favorite subject is history. I’m particularly fond of the renaissance period and the Tudor dynasty. School is fun for me because I see all of my friends there and I really do enjoy learning. That’s a lot of why I want to be an exchange student- I love to learn about other cultures and I can’t think of a better way to do that!
As hobbies, I have been taking voice lessons since I was very little. I love to sing! I also read a lot; reading is one of my favorite pastimes. I’m a regular member of my youth group, and am there about three times a week. I think it’s a great opportunity to spend time with friends and learn about my faith, which is a big part of my life. Traveling is my all-time favorite activity. Though I’ve never been outside the States, I have traveled all around America. My favorite place to visit is New York. I saw three Broadway musicals there and I absolutely love big cities! One of my goals in life is to travel all over the world!
Overall, I think I’m a pretty nice person. I love to have fun and be crazy but I also can appreciate the art of conversation and beauty of just being with people you love. I really look to live life to its fullest. I am ambitious and a big dreamer. I have a lot of ideas for my future! I love meeting new people and learning all about their backgrounds because I believe everyone has a story. It has always been one of my dreams to be an exchange student and I’m so exited that’s its finally happening.
I am so ecstatic about getting to know you and your country! I really look forward to being immersed in another way of life and learning about the world outside of my own backyard. Thank you so much for the opportunity to do that!
Sincerely,
XXXXXXXXX

I think it sounds great, but I’d cut out a bit of the information about your family.
Good luck studying abroad! What country are you going to?

it is good….! some programs have specific questions you need to answer in it, thouhg, so make sure you follow their rules
I think it’s very good. I’ve been hosting and repping for 14 years, so have read hundreds of these letters! Your potential host family will pour over this for every possible bit of information when selecting their student — the more the better!
I have a few small suggestions:
Explain what a “dispatcher” is. Most people won’t know — and even I’m not sure if you mean emergency or truck dispatcher!
You mention cats, if you also like dogs, say so.
Explain that “youth group” is part of your church. You don’t say where you are going, but many Europeans do NOT attend church much.
You mention liking cities, but would you also be happy in a small town?
Something I’ve always appreciated in a “host family” letter is a note from parents. If your organization allows it, ask your parents to include a note to the potential host family about you.
Good luck and have a great time!
